Cardiovascular Technologists and Technicians

New treatments and new regional facilities make the field of cardiovascular technology an exciting one in Western Massachusetts. While there are not a high number of local job openings each year for cardiovascular technologists and technicians in the area, the opportunities that do exist are difficult for local employers to fill because of a lack of qualified workers.

Cardiovascular technologists and technicians assist physicians in testing, diagnosing, and treating heart and blood vessel ailments. Cardiovascular technologists may specialize in three areas of practice: Invasive cardiology, cardiac sonography, and vascular technology.

Cardiovascular technologists and technicians:

  • Use high technology equipment to test, diagnose and monitor patients
  • Assist physicians during surgeries and other procedures related to the heart or blood vessels
  • Interact with patients and families during tests and procedures 

Employment opportunities can be found in:

  • Hospitals
  • Physicians offices
  • Medical and diagnostic labs 

Education and training requirements

A two-year associate’s degree is usually required. In the two-year program, the first year of training focuses on core courses, followed by the second year of specialized cardiovascular instruction. There are no state license requirements for this career.

Cardiovascular technologists and technicians are also expected to have:

  • Academic skills in science, technology, and math
  • A high comfort level with technology
  • Up-to-date knowledge of treatment and diagnostic technology
  • Strong communication skills, both with patients and care team members
