Education & Training for a Healthcare Career

Your Career Journey Begins Early

Preparing for a career in healthcare can begin as early as middle and high school. Whether you’re interested in becoming a nurse, doctor, lab technician, or another healthcare professional, getting an early start helps you build the skills and knowledge needed for success. By exploring different career paths, strengthening your science and math skills, and participating in hands-on experiences, you’ll be better prepared for the next steps toward a rewarding future in healthcare.

Hands-On Exposure to Healthcare Careers

Early exposure programs offer middle and high school students the opportunity to explore various healthcare fields through hands-on activities, job shadowing, and mentorship from professionals. These programs allow students to experience different roles—from patient care to lab work—while building confidence and practical skills in a supportive environment. By participating, students gain valuable insight into the healthcare industry, helping them make informed decisions about their future education and career paths.

High School Pathway Programs for Healthcare Careers

Several high school programs provide students with structured pathways to jump-start their college and career journey in healthcare. These include:

  • CTE After Dark (Chapter 74 Partnership Program)
  • Career Connections (CTE Non-Chapter 74)
  • CTE Chapter 74 Programs
  • Early College
  • Innovation Career Pathways
  • Postsecondary CTE Chapter 74

CTE After Dark (Chapter 74 Partnership Program)

The Chapter 74 Partnership Program, also known as “After Dark,” allows students to access Career Vocational Technical Education (CVTE) pathways through partnerships between school districts. This program enables students to enroll in specialized technical education courses that may not be available in their home districts, often utilizing facilities during off-hours to maximize resources. Participation in Chapter 74 programs may also provide additional state aid through Chapter 70 funding.

Innovation Career Pathways

Innovation Career Pathways give students the opportunity to gain coursework and hands-on experience in high-demand industries such as healthcare, life sciences, information technology, engineering, and advanced manufacturing. These pathways are designed in collaboration with employers to ensure students receive relevant training and exposure to real-world career opportunities before graduation.

Early College Programs

Early College programs are designed to support students traditionally underrepresented in higher education by blending high school and college coursework. These programs offer structured pathways that allow students to earn college credits while gaining exposure to various career opportunities. By participating in Early College, students can reduce the time and cost of earning a college degree while increasing their chances of completing their education successfully.
